Lessons:
You will notice I updated this information and removed the previous
week's lessons from March. I want to start fresh now that spring
break is over.
Tuesday April 14
Hi all! Watch the following video.....
Video recap:
*Open your language arts book to page 68 where it says "Grammar in Context."
*Read the directions and example.
*Correct the four sentences by rewriting them using the correct verb tense.
*Email me the four sentences BY THURSDAY 4/16. You can simply just send them in an email--no need for putting them in an attachment or taking a picture unless that is something you prefer to do. Keep it easy on yourself!
*I will email you feedback on how you are doing with it. This is just a review of verbs before we do something new next week.
Check back on Thursday for the next thing!!! Email or text questions!

Thursday April 16
Hi everybody! I hope you are having a good week! It's good to hear from each of you as you email me your work! If you still have not sent me Tuesday's items, please do! Make sure to label what it is so I can organize what you are turning in!
Watch another fabulous video.....
:
Video recap:
*Open your language arts book to page 619. It says "Assessment Practice."
*Read the directions and the paragraph.
*Use your knowledge--specifically of verbs--to proofread the paragraph. There are other grammar issues as well.
*Answer the 6 questions and email your responses by Friday 4/17. (responses will be A,B,C, or D)
Check back on Monday for the next thing--we will try something new! Gerunds,
participles, and infinitives! Yay!

Monday April 20
Happy Monday!
Watch the following video. I know there's a random piece of hair sticking up on the side of my head and I dont care! I wasn't about to redo the whole thing!! :)
Okay, now that you have watched my terrible video, watch the video below!
Video recap:
*The video described what a gerund is. They are tricky litte words that look like verbs, but they don't act like verbs. *They function as nouns in a sentence.
*They end in "-ing."
*Try the exercise in your language arts book on page 646.
*There are five sentences that you will rewrite to form gerunds. Read the instructions and follow the sample that has been done for you.
*Send me your answers by Wednesday April 22.
Check back on Wednesday. We will discuss the two other types of verbals--participles and infinitives! If you need me, email or text! I'm here to help!

Wednesday April 22
Watch the powerpoint video below. It reviews verbals. We have already talked about gerunds. Today there are two more verb lookalikes that we need to discuss! The powerpoint does a good job at making it easy!
Watch the following:
Video recap:
*Gerunds, infinitves, and participles are verbals. They look like verbs, but don't act like verbs in sentences.
*You need to know about them so you can use them for sentence variety in your writing. They can spice things up!
*You need to know about them so when you proofread your writing you don't mistake them for verbs when checking your verb tense consistency.
*Try some practice--Do "Grammar in Context" on page 385 and on page 668. You don't have to send it until Monday April 27. Make sure to label what you are sending me so I can tell what it is!
I am so proud of all of you that are continuing to practice this stuff! It will keep you from falling behind in your skills! I know this can be really hard for some of you and you miss your old routine. Me too!!!! We have to keep at it though! I will be back on here Monday with another terrible video of myself for you!!! :)

Monday April 27
Assignment for this week: We are working on non-fiction skills one last time before high school!
*Read pages 320-322 in your language arts book. This includes information on page 320 regarding how to effectively read non-fiction text in order to comprehend it.
*When you read the article on pages 321 and 322, pay special attention to the tidbits of information on the righthand side of the article in the margin. These are reminders of the reading strategies you and I have talked about so many times throughout this school year.
*Do 1-5 on page 323. Make sure to read the information in the margin on this page too. It will help you select the correct answers. This will allow you to practice your reading comprehension skills including main idea, author's purpose, and inferencing.
*You can send me the 1-5 answers by this Thursday April 30.

Wednesday April 29
Hey all! I know I usually have another assignment posted mid-week, but there are too many of you that seem to be behind. I am still getting a lot of gerund, participle, and infinitive assignments from last week. That's okay, but I need to stop a minute and let you all somewhat catch up. Kudos to all of you that are following my pace--I'm trying to go pretty slowly while continuing with our normal curriculum so you are not behind in your English skills. I will check back on Monday with another practice that relates to writing (no, you don't have to write an essay!!!).
FOR HONORS 5th HOUR:
If you are looking for more to do....The short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" (page 593 of the LA book) is a classic piece of literature that most people who take honors in middle school have read. It is something that your grandma probably read a long time ago!!!!!! If the end of the story makes you mad (and it will), there is a sequel called "The Discourager of Hesitancy." The sequel isn't in your book though...I added it below in case you were interested.
This is "The Discourager of Hesitancy" part one...
And part two...

Monday May 4
Welcome back after such a beautiful weekend! I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy it!
If you still need to give me last week's work, that's fine. This week I want to look at one more item regarding non-fiction and I would like to pair it with a writing practice.
Assignment for Wednesday:
*Using the text you already read from last week on page 321, I want to practice a written response that relates to that text. It will be a review of revising, editing, and proofreading.
*Read page 324. This is helpful for writing a short answer response or something longer like an essay.
*Look at page 325. There is a piece of writing already done for you. Answer the three questions below the sample writing.
*Give your answers to me by Wednesday May 6.
*********************************************************************************************************************************
Wednesday May 6
There are no additional assignments today. People are still turning in page 325 1-3 today. I will be back tomorrow with the last item you will work on for the rest of the school year!
******************************************************************************************************************************************
Thursday May 7
Today I would like to start the final item we will complete prior to summer break. I know you will be returning your books in a couple weeks, so we need to complete the reading portion of the assignment before then.
*Turn to page 220 in your book.
*Read the build background section to help with prior knowledge before you read the story "Flowers for Algernon."
*This is a story most people find entertaining and interesting all at the same time--it's usually a favorite!
*Also, read the Making Inferences part on 220. Since the story is written as a journal, there is really only one side to the story, so you might have to "read between the lines" sometimes.
*You have until next Wednesday May 13 to complete the reading. It's kind of long. (pages 220-245).
*I will be back on Monday with a quick check-in to give you some things to think about as you finish up the reading.
If you want the audio of the story you can find it at this site:

Monday May 11
Happy Monday! This week you have two things to make sure you have done for language arts.
1. Turn in your work from last week and even prior to that if you are still behind. The reason is because you have to return your textbooks next week, so we need to start wrapping things up.
2. Finish "Flowers for Algernon" by Wednesday May 13. As you read, make sure to make inferences along the way. If we were reading this together, I would point out on pages 226, 228, 229, and 245 you have to read between the lines to fully understand the text. See if you can understand what I mean as you look at those pages.
On Wednesday I will be back with one last assignment for you to complete.
**************************************************************************************************************************************
Wednesday May 13
Video recap:
*Finish up reading "Flowers for Algernon."
*Answer the following using paragraph form:
Do you think Charlie is happier at the end of the story than at the beginning? Explain why or why not. Make sure to include information regarding the operation, include information about Algernon, and of course explain what actually happens to Charlie.
*This paragraph should be at least five sentences in length. Use a topic sentence and support.
*******************************************************************************************************
Wednesday May 20
Well, this is it! Make sure you:
*Get all work in by Friday May 22. I will not accept it after that.
*Return your book to school sometime this week.
There is only one thing left. It's not a grade, but I thought you might like to watch the "Flowers for Algernon" movie. If we were in class, we would have watched it and done a comparison/contrast discussion. Of course, that won't happen, but you are still welcome to watch. The movie answers a few questions you may have had while reading the text.
I hope you all have a relaxing summer. Good luck to you as you head off to high school this fall! It's been an interesting year--one I don't think any of us will soon forget! Congratulations on finishing middle school!
